'Peelout' practically functions as a super spin dash - holding it down will have Sonic turn into a ball and charge up speed. That means that pressing it while standing still will have Sonic crouch in place, and pressing it while sprinting will send Sonic into a ball roll, letting you go through enemies while losing very little speed. Down effectively acts like the crouch button - pressing it at any point will effectively put Sonic in a 'Down' position. However, there's also two buttons labeled 'Down' and 'Peelout'. There's the bog-standard move, jump, and camera controls. The controls are simple, but deep at the same time.
